Great Gray Owl, Strix nebulosa. Great Gray Owls are the only member of the Strix genus to be found in the entire of the Northern Hemisphere. Their species name, nebulosa, is derived from the word ‘nebulous’, which is defined as in the form of a cloud or haze, hazy, unclear, vague, or ill-defined. Great Gray Owls are sometimes called the Phantom of the North Woods, which seems fitting for a hazy, unclear owl.New Hampshire, USA©Two Loons/Erin Lehnert
