Piping Plover, Charadrius melodus. Piping Plovers are an endangered species in the United States. Massive efforts in their three breeding areas, Great Plains, Great Lakes, and Atlantic, have had some success in their species’ recovery. The chicks rely on camouflage to evade predators, and will drop and remain motionless when danger is near. On the stony beaches of Lake Sakakawea, they appear to be another pebble on the beach.Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, USA©Two Loons/Erin Lehnert
