The Northern Pygmy-owl is a mere six inches tall, making it very hard to spot amongst the tall coniferous trees that they frequent. When fledging, the owlets will cling to, dangle from, and climb trees, earning the young owls the nickname “branchers.” The Tlingit word for an owl without ear tufts is “k’akw.”
