Although often called a killer whale, these highly social sea mammals belong to the dolphin family. They are apex predators that hunt in pods governed by a complex matriarchal social hierarchy. The Orca features often in the mythology of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, and is considered a symbol of travelers. The Tlingit word for Orca is “keet.”
